Bible Talk with Sister Deb: When Jesus Gives You Authority, Every Mission Is Possible
Jesus equips us with authority to fulfill His mission, enabling us to preach, heal, and transform lives when we step out in faith. He sends us with His power, preparing us to face both acceptance and rejection as we share the gospel with those uniquely positioned to hear it from us.
• Jesus was rejected in His hometown of Nazareth but continued His mission undeterred
• He sent disciples out with His authority and power over unclean spirits
• Minimal provisions (only staff and sandals) taught complete dependence on God
• Not everyone will accept our message - we must shake off rejection and move forward
• What appears as failure in the world's eyes may be success in God's economy
• Each believer is uniquely designed to reach specific people with the gospel
• Christianity needs fewer spectators and more active participants in God's mission

Speaker 2:Bible Talk. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. I'm so glad to be back here in the studio to pass the Word of God on. So I am in the book of Mark, chapter 6. And I know you're probably thinking, wow, man, she stays in Mark. Well, I love the book of Mark, I love all the Gospels, but there's just something about the book of Mark. It's grabbed me and a lot of my messages has been out of Mark.
Speaker 2:So, bear with me and hope you enjoy. And I'm in the book of Mark, chapter 6. And in the opening verses of Mark 6, jesus is returning to his hometown of Nazareth. He had been out preaching and stuff, and he was telling the same message that he told all throughout galilee uh. But the reception of him coming back to his own country, his hometown, was anything but welcoming. I mean, you know? Uh, it said you know. And verse two says on the sabbath day was come.
Speaker 2:He began to teach in his synagogues that many hearing him were astonished and they wanted to know wow, where is this man coming from? Where did he get all this stuff at? And they were like is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and all his sisters here with us? They were offended at him, but Jesus said unto them a prophet is not without honor, but in his own country and among his, his own kin and in his own house. It's a really sad thing. You know, the Bible says he marveled and I really wanted to think about that word marveled. And I had to look it up to see exactly what the verses were. And it said, you know, it wondered, in other words, he pondered on them. He wondered about why they were acting like that, at their unbelief. But the Bible said he went around about the villages teaching still. Yet he didn't let that stop him right. And so the city was marked with so much unbelief, and unbelief that the book of Mark tells us that made Jesus marvel. Wow, you know.
Speaker 2:Now, while Jesus was, he was affected by their unbelief. He wasn't surprised, I'm sure. Their unbelief didn't deter him at all from doing his mission right. So he left Nazareth and he kept on teaching. But he also did something else that he hadn't done up to this point in time in his ministry he sent out witnesses to speak on his behalf. And you know, over the course of his ministry Jesus had been teaching and revealing himself to his disciples. He had been doing all the teaching and all the preaching. Of course they had followed him and watched and observed. You know and see what's going on. And of course they have followed him and watched and observed. You know and see what's going on.
Speaker 2:But after his trip to Nazareth, jesus takes their training to just a little bit higher level and he sends them out to teach a minister on his behalf. And he sends them out two by two. Now the gospel tells us the gospel of Mark tells us that Jesus sent his disciples out two by two, and he sent them out with some specific set of instructions, right? So in verse 7, it says and he called unto him the twelve and began to send them forth two by two and gave them power over unclean spirits.
Speaker 2:Power the power that is where I'm wanting to really, really, really get the message today is the power, and it says that he commanded him that they should take nothing for their journey, only a staff, no script, no bread, no money in their purse, be shod with sandals and not put on two coats, you know, uh, he sent them with minimal supplies and without any means of gathering, getting supplies, except for the hospitality of others and people. I take that as Jesus teaching them that they need to live holy and holy and complete, complete dependency on God. And that's what he wants us to be today. He wants us to be total dependent on him because he can supply all of our needs.
Speaker 2:You know, we don't have to look to and fro Now. Jesus is preparing them for their future ministries and we see here that the ministry of the 12 was kind of unique, but not because of who they were, but because of who sent them out and because, more because of the authority with which they were sent, they were sent with a specific and special mission. You know, and, my friends, we know that all Christians have been given a mission from God. We are commissioned. We're commissioned to go out and proclaim the gospel and call the lost people and the lost sinners to repent right Now.
Speaker 2:Throughout his ministry, jesus had performed signs and wonders. That was trying to show people who he was and to show his authority. But as he sent these 12 out, he sends them out with the same power and the same authority to perform the same things that he did. He said, you know, he even told us the things that he done. We can do greater with our faith Now, while our ministry it may be different in many ways than the apostles, but we too are sent out as his representatives. We too have the same power and the same authority that he gave the apostles that day. You know, god has trusted us with the same authority, the same power, the same power that raised Jesus from the grave, the same power that parted the sea. He trusted us with that same power and authority, and so we must go in faith, because Jesus has given us the authority which is only his to give. He is the boss, you know, we, the sooner we need to realize that, a lot of people need to realize that he's the boss and we have the authority to go out in his name. He told us that Jesus said in Matthew 28 and 18 through 20,. He said all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Right, but what's this? He says Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations I mean people. This is the mission. There's more to that, but I'm not going to say it all and I'm not going to go over every single verse in this chapter, because I try to leave things out or try to not go on everything, because I want you to think, wow, man, I want you to be intrigued. I want you to think, wow, okay, she didn't go over all this. I'm going to go back and read it and try to get more into it. So I leave some out, not that I'm leaving it out. I just don't go over all of it because I want you to be able to say, wow, I'm going to go back and read this. But he gave us in his name, he gave us that authority, he trusted us, he has confidence in us and he gave us the same authority that they had that day.
Speaker 2:Now he goes on to teach his disciples, and he told them, of course, not to take nothing but their staff and their sandals. So, in other words, what he's telling us is you know what Y'all need to pack light. You don't need a backup plan. You need to pack light when you go on these missions that God sends you on. Pack light. You don't need a backup plan. You need to pack light when you go on these missions that God sends you on.
Speaker 2:Pack light, because that means that we're going to have to put all of our trust in Jesus to lead us. You know we won't need a backup plan. We need only to follow where Jesus sends us and trust in him. You know that's kind of like. You know the Israelites. You know when he freed them, you freed them and told them just to go and go to the land of milk and honey. I've got this land for you.
Speaker 2:They didn't trust him enough to obey him and go. What should have been a few days trip took them 40 years because they didn't trust him and they didn't listen to him. They didn't have faith. But when he sends us out, people, we have to have faith. We have to go on that faith and that authority that he gave us. When we travel a lot, that means that we already have everything that we need to serve our Lord. We don't need money. We already have what we need to do what Jesus is asking us to do. Have what we need to do what Jesus is asking us to do, you know, because when God sends us out on our mission, he will equip us well for the task. We just have to have faith. We have to have faith in that authority that he gave us you know, so he also goes on down there and he tells them.
Speaker 2:He says he said unto them in what place? Wherever you enter into a house there, abide till you depart from that place. So he's telling his disciples. You know what, when you go out there and you pick a place and you stay at this place, you stay at that place until you. You know you're in this village. You know there's so many different houses in these little villages that there's probably some people are here that had money and could offer the disciples this kind of, this kind of room, this kind of board and this kind of food. And there was probably some over here that maybe didn't have a lot of money and they could only offer them a little bit.
Speaker 2:But he tells them to stay there, don't move until you depart, you know. But he also tells them, you know, that wherever you go on your mission, not everyone's going to accept you. And that's what he's trying to tell his disciples. You know, when you go out here, people, everybody's not going to accept you, everybody is not going to accept your message. There's going to be some people that's going to refuse to hear you, you know. But, my friends, I'm telling you here today that not everywhere we go and not everybody we talk to is going to welcome us with open arms. Because, you know, jesus never told us the road was going to be easy. He never told us that we were going to just go outside, set up a ministry and everybody was going to come if it were only that easy. But Jesus said, he told them. He said, you know, but Jesus said to to. He told them. He said and wherever you shall, whoever shall not receive you, not hear you when you depart, then shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. So see, he's telling them. You know what he told her. The type was not to be discouraged, you know. But all we have to do is give these people to God and move on. We can't dwell in one spot. We can't dwell and try to make someone hear us. We can't force ourself on somebody, but we had to. We had to just give them to the Lord and go on.
Speaker 2:And he tell he's telling the disciples right here, you know, don't get discouraged, because people are not going to, everybody's not going to hear you. You know what I'm saying. So if he's telling them to expect to fail, then you know we should expect to fail too, because we're not nowhere near perfect. I mean, they walked with him daily, on a daily basis, everywhere, every village. They walked with him and he's telling them, you know, what he's saying is hey, you're going to probably fail some places because everybody's not going to hear you. So you know, we should expect to fail sometimes too, but that don't mean that we should get discouraged. He fail sometimes too, but that don't mean that we should get discouraged. He said we dust off of our feet as a testimony against them and go on.
Speaker 2:You know, when we seem like we're failing, we don't get discouraged because, people, if you look at it like this and think of it like this and keep this in your thoughts, failure in the eyes of the world just might be overwhelming success in the eyes of God. Think about, you know, think about the cross. It proved that really, in the eyes of the world, jesus failed because they put him on the cross, they hung him on the cross. In the eyes of the world, that was failure. But, my friends, I'm telling you today it wasn't failure in the eyes of God, that was success, because Jesus gave his life for us, you know. And so the cross proves that. You know, failure is not going to be. It's not going to be as bad as we think, because all we get to is call on the Lord, you know.
Speaker 2:And so when Jesus gave the disciples and us things to do, and when we go out and we spread this wonderful word and we're rejected, what does he say? When you leave, shake the dust from your feet as a testimony against them and go on. Now, this is not telling us, to us, or even the disciples. It's not telling us to be petty or mad or whiny or not to throw a fit as you leave town. This is telling us, you know what? Pray for these people, give them to the Lord, pray for them and go on and let God handle them. You know, to me, I'm thinking, the shaking of the dust off is like saying you know what this is really. I'm going to leave this defiled place and I'm going to leave your defiled dust here and you handle it and leave it to the Lord and go on.
Speaker 2:Because, see, we can't make people believe us. I, because, see, we can't make people believe us. I wish that we could force people to god. If we could force people to god, my whole family would be in church every sunday. Every time the church doors open, I'd have every one of them lined up on the front pews. But see, we can't. We're called. We're not called to beat the truth into people. We can only pray that god will open up their eyes. We can only pray that we can talk to them and shine the light to them and give them the good news that the Lord will work on their hearts.
Speaker 2:So when people don't want to hear us and they reject us they rejected Jesus in His own country, in His own town and when they reject us, we just have to go on, because people trust me. There is somewhere out there somebody is willing to listen. Somewhere out there somebody is going to listen and they want to listen, they want to hear, you know. But Mark 6, 12, and 13 told us that they woman only preached. They preached, you know, that men should repent and cast out many devils, and they anointed many with oil and healed them. That's what the Word said. See, jesus gave them a mission. He gave them a mission. He told them to be focused and not get distracted. You know, he taught them to be prepared for rejection. And that's what he's saying here Be prepared. You know what. And so what's left for it? What's left is there to do the people? It's time to get ready. It's time to get up and get to it.
Speaker 2:Friends, today God has given us the same authority that he gave his son. You know, our mission may look a little different than that of the disciples. You know what I'm saying. We may have more distractions around now than they did, but, you know, the disciples preached the same message as John the Baptist, the same as Jesus, and we have that same power. We have that same authority to spread, the same authority to spread the news, to spread the word of the gospel, to get the good news out there that Jesus Christ died for our sins and that he came back in three days and he is coming back again someday. We just need to use our God-given authority because he gave it to us to spread the gospel.
Speaker 2:You know, and check this out, think of it like this there's nothing no cooler than seeing the lives transformed of people who had been living in sin. You know, see the lives of people transformed by the gospel of Christ, seeing people grow in their walk with the Lord, seeing people cast away old sin and living in faithfulness to Christ. There's nothing no better than seeing men and women who are spiritually dead come to life through the power of the Holy Spirit and then seeing people who have lived a life of sin be free and see their eyes light up from the way their lives have been changed forever. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that? Who would not want to be a part of seeing these people walk away from their sin and away from the devil and the enemy and give their life to God?
Speaker 2:Well, people, god does all of these things and you know what. He uses commissioned disciples, meaning you and me, to do it. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that? He gave us that power to go out there and to talk to people and to help people try to get their lives in order and change their lives. And then, after you spread the gospel of Christ and think of this after you spread the gospel of Christ, what can be more glorious than to see a friend or a loved one in heaven? And that person walks up to you and says hey, you know what? Because you obeyed the Lord, because you stepped out and you talked to me and you gave me the gospel, I'm here. I'm here in heaven because you listened and you obeyed God. You went out and you did what the Lord told you to do and praise the Lord because you stepped up and was obedient. I'm here in paradise with the Lord today. Nobody told me that, but you stepped out and you told me that. So because of you not basically because of you, but because you were obedient and you told me the word. You told me the good news. You know I'm here. I'm here. I gave my life to the Lord and I'm here because I heard the word and my friends, I'm here. I gave my life to the Lord and I'm here because I heard the word. And my friends, I'm here today to tell you, if you are a follower of Jesus, then he has a mission for you and he is equipping you and preparing you for that mission. You know and I'm telling you now.
Speaker 2:There are people out there that you, each and every one of you, each and every one of us, everybody who is commissioned to preach the gospel, to spread the word, we are all uniquely designed to share the gospel with certain people. There are certain people out there that's in our eyesight and in our journey that we are destined to meet, that we have to give biblical, that we have to give biblical counsel. We have to encourage. There's people out there that he puts in our paths, that when we're walking down the road, there's people out there that he wants us to talk to. There's people out there that are living in sin, that are living in darkness, that just don't know how to get their way out of it. But there's people out there that he wants us to minister to, to talk to you. But there's people out there that he wants us to minister to, to talk to you.
Speaker 2:Know, people that we need to encourage and think of it like this you may be a link in the chain that God can use to creating a person, to recreating somebody's heart, to getting in their heart. It may, he may use you, he may use me, he may use you know, the people in your church, you, just we just have to go in faith people. We have to go in faith and use that authority. Friends, when you're serving in the messenger role, you need to go with confidence that God's given you His authority. He's given you His authority to patiently share the good news about our Savior, about Jesus Christ, who freely has given us the gift of life, freely gives it to anybody that reaches out for it. You know, and when you share this good news and this gospel with your friends and your family and the people that you know, you share the message of the cross, then you can sit back and you watch the power of God bring salvation and healing and transformation to these people.
Speaker 2:My friends, I so encourage you all today to get to work. I'm telling you, christianity has enough spectators who sit back and enjoy the benefits of what God has for us the benefits of belief, if you want to call it that but they never seem to step up to the plate and fulfill the duties. They never seem to get up and do the mission that God has given them. Don't be one of those people. God gave you a mission, my friends.
Speaker 2:Today you may feel, maybe, that you're not ready for your mission. Maybe you're not prepared, but I'm here to tell you. I'm here to tell you today you may think that, that you're not ready for your mission. Maybe you're not prepared, but I'm here to tell you. I'm here to tell you today you may think that you don't have what it takes to do the task that God has before you. But, my friends, I'm here to tell somebody today. You don't have to have it all figured out, you don't have to know it all, you don't have to know a little, wow. All you have to know is that Jesus Christ has called you and given you his authority.
Speaker 2:Now go, I urge you, go, tell others what Jesus has done for you. Go, in his name, people, in his power, my gosh, go by the authority that he has laid down for you. Remember, some won't believe, but others will, others will, and those are the ones that's counting on you to step up to the plate and use that authority, that God-given authority that he gave you. See, this mission may seem impossible to you, but, people, I'm telling you, under Christ's authority, this mission is possible any day, and I just so. So beg you now, step up and use that authority, the same authority that he sent two by two. He sent two by two and he gave them the authority over unclean spirits, the authority to heal, to touch people, to cast out demons. He gave them authority to preach that men should repent, and he's doing the same thing for us Now. Did he give us the authority to raise the power to raise the dead? I don't know, probably not, but he's gave us the authority that all we have to do is call on his name. All you have to do is call on his name and you've got that power. And you've got that authority and people.
Speaker 2:I just urge you today. I urge you so today and I'm going to close with a prayer, but before I do, I so urge you to get up today. Stop being a spectator. Get up, get on the battlefield and use the authority that God has given you, the God-given authority that he has given you, to go out there and preach the word of God, tell people to repent, cast out demons, whatever he's telling you to do. You've got the authority to do it. You just have to use it. It's there and I hope and pray that this has helped somebody today. I hope and pray that this has blessed you as much as it's blessed me to bring it to you People. I just so urge you, please, please, get out there today. People's lives depend on you using that authority and spreading that word. So I'm going to end in prayer.
Speaker 2:Our Father, god in heaven. Lord, I thank you for the word of God. I thank you for the power and the authority that you give us, and each and every one of us, that all we have to do is step up and tell people hey, this is what God's done for me. He can do the same thing for you. You gave us the power and the authority, under your name, to go out there and preach the gospel, to spread the word.
Speaker 2:I ask you to bless each and everybody, lord, that's hearing this. Bless the people, the ears that need to hear it. Let it go to the heart that needs to feel it. Just let them understand, lord, what they need to do. Give them the strength and the power to step up, lord, to quit being a spectator, but step up, lord, and be the child of God that you have called them to be. Lord, we thank you for this program, we thank you for this day, we thank you for the many blessings. We praise you, we honor you and we thank you for salvation. And Lord, just bless each and every one of us, for we ask these and all things in Jesus' holy sweet name. We pray Jesus, holy sweet name. We pray Amen and amen.
Speaker 1:God bless everybody and see you next week. We've been the wonder of a baby's cry and in the thunder of a midnight sky there's something stronger than the heart of steel.
