Seven Dips And A Bruised Ego
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Pride can make you miss the very thing you’ve been praying for. Today I sit with an Old Testament story that still hits home: Naaman, a celebrated commander, looks unstoppable on the outside while leprosy quietly destroys him from within. If you’ve ever felt strong in public but broken in private, this message is for you.
We follow Naaman’s path to healing through a chain of unlikely help: a young captive girl with courageous faith, and the prophet Elisha who refuses to play into status, ego, or “big moment” expectations. The instruction is almost offensively simple: go to the Jordan River and wash seven times. That simplicity is the point. This is a conversation about Christian humility, Bible truth, and why God’s instructions often challenge our pride before they change our circumstances.
I also share a personal testimony about obeying God’s prompting to step out of my comfort zone and pray for my mom during a difficult season. It’s a reminder that breakthrough can be on the other side of a small act of obedience, and that faith is not about the “specialness” of a place, it’s about trusting God’s Word. We close by finishing the full Naaman account, including gratitude, worship, and the warning shown through Gehazi’s greed.
If this encouraged you, subscribe to Bible Talk with Sister Deb Osborne, share it with a friend who needs strength, and leave a review so more people can find this Bible study on obedience, pride, and healing.
I would like to welcome everyone to the show enjoy and God bless everyone.

SPEAKER_01Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. It's a beautiful day that God has made. We're just grateful to be back into the studio today talking about the Word of God. And today I want to talk to you about it's an Old Testament story. It's about a great warrior. He was a warrior, but he was he was struck with a terrible illness. From the girl's homeland. And he's also going to come in. And so the Naaman is the warrior of this story. And he is a commander of the army of the king of Syria. He's a great man, a high favorite with the king. Clearly used to being in control, you know. Um despite his wealth and his his fame and his physical strength, Naaman does not have control over this dreaded disease. It has control over him. See, Naaman had leprosy. And even though he looked strong on the outside, he was carrying something that was slowly and surely destroying him. And you know, friends, there's this story, in this story, I picked this story because there's several, there's different things that we can learn by this story, you know. Yeah, he's a mighty warrior. He has power, wealth, connections, but he also has a chronic illness. He has leprosy, you know. And despite his wealth and his fame and his physical strength, Naaman does not have control over this dreaded disease. It has control over him, right? Um He was carrying this around that was slowly destroying him. And you know, the lesson, one of the first lessons here that I think we need to learn is you can be powerful and still be broken. Amen. You can. You know? You can be powerful and still be broken. And so let's talk about leprosy for a few. Matt Naaman was a leper, okay? So he had the leprosy, and of course we know leprosy was kind of like the AIDS of Naaman's day, right? Lepers were isolated, they were treated as outcast. Uh it was mo it was one of the most feared diseases of that time. Extremely contagious and in many cases incurable, and it oftentimes led to death. Now his case must not have been as bad because he was in the Syrian army, you know. Um leprosy sometimes has been uh sometimes when we read the New Testament, the Old Testament, we see leprosy quite a bit. Uh I think sometimes it was uh that well now the Bible doesn't tell us why he had the leprosy, but it's sometimes we know that leprosy was uh both a symbol of sin and of God's punishment for sin. For example, in Numbers 12 and 5, we see that God infected Miriam with leprosy as punishment for her rebellion against Moses, her and Aaron's rebellion, actually. And so uh so this leprosy uh, you know, if Naaman wants to do something about this leprosy, then he's gonna have to listen to a very unlikely advisor. And then he's gonna have to turn to a very unlikely healer, right? And so now one of the heroes of the story, the unlikely hero of this story, is the young captive girl from Israel. She was captured and arrayed, and now she was a servant to Naaman's wife. I didn't get the wife's name. I don't think the Bible even told us neither one of those ladies' names. But the word of God doesn't give us her name, but uh apparently she must be a young girl, helpless, you know, to change her life, maybe thinking she's a poor victim that's has no control over her life. Uh I just don't uh see her as a victim because I think she has a lot of faith, you know, because this young girl goes to her to Naaman's wife one day and he tells she tells him that if if Naaman would go see the prophet in Israel, he would be healed. This prophet could help heal him. Now this prophet is of another hero of the story, which is Elisha. Uh, but I don't see this young lady as a victim. I I think because of her faith and her belief in God, she's saying, Hey, go get go to uh Israel, see Elisha and he can heal you. You know, I think she's not dwelling on we can say she's not dwelling on her fate, that she trusts the Lord. Why would she bring this up to a man that's holding her captive and that she's a slave to him and his wife if she was a victim? Sh she could be right in the place where she was supposed to meant to be at that time. Amen. So this young girl was able to show remarkable compass compassion to those people who have power over her. So I don't see her as a victim. I see her as a hero, right? And so this girl tells Naaman's wife, If if if my Lord, if only my Lord, would go to the prophet who was in Samaria, Elisha, then he he could be cured of his his leprosy. Now I don't think she's trying to help herself or her own circumstances. I think she's just showing compassion toward toward Naaman and his and his wife. I think she's showing compassion. Um And so Naaman listens to this young girl, and I guess he's probably desperate, you know what I'm saying? But he decides to go see the prophet Elisha, right? So he goes, he he decides to go see him. So he he goes and he gathers up all of his this money and his riches, and he probably took uh gems and I I think maybe chariots and horses. He he gathers all of all kinds of things up, a huge treasure. And he goes to Elisha's house. He's even got a letter from his king. But see, the thing about it is, is when he gets to Elisha's house, Elisha doesn't come out. I think one of the things, one of the first mistakes that Naaman made was he had all of these expectations. And sometimes I think where we make our mistake is we have all these expectations from God. We pray for things and we ask for things and we expect it. We have expectations. I think sometimes we have unreal expectations because his ways aren't our ways. But anyway, so he goes to Elisha's house. You know, uh and the thing about it is if you think about Elisha, Elisha, I I hope I'm saying that right. If you think about it, the prophet has he's gonna have to help Elisha figure out anyway how to put his trust in the Lord and not just his own strength or his wealth. Because when he comes to Elisha's house, he's got all this money, all these gems and stuff, apparently a treasure drove with him. But see, Elisha doesn't care about any of that. You know. But when the when he goes to the prophet's house, the prophet doesn't come out. So instead he sends Naaman a message. He t he tells Naaman, you know what? You need to go and bathe in the River Jordan seven times. Go dip and go wash in the river Jordan. So Elisha sends him this message. Well, Naaman apparently come up on the scene with all these expectations. He he's expecting a dramatic public ceremony, you know. He he doesn't understand. Uh he's furious for one thing because he doesn't Elisha doesn't come out and see him, and then he's mad because he uh, you know, he doesn't uh Elisha doesn't come out over and touch his head and anoint him and and just magically cure him. And that was his expectations. He was expecting all the bells and whistles. You know, his pride was hurt because he, after all, he was a mighty warrior in in the Syrian army, you know, he should have gotten more. He should have gotten, shouldn't have been better. It was too simple, is what he was thinking. Elisha, Naaman's probably thinking, wow, you know, why does this prophet come out and anoint me and call on God and pray for me and do something dramatic, you know, run around in the streets and who knows, you know what? He was just expecting something bigger. Instead, he was told to go wash in a river, a muddy river at that. See, he was mad because he didn't want to do this, and he he knew, you know, he for one thing, Elisha wants him to go wash himself in this river, but he says a dirty river at that. It's he called it actually a a dirty river. He says, rather than one of the big rivers in my own land, why do I have to go work wash in this nasty little river? So the Jordan River, and we all know uh a lot about the Jordan River. We know a few things, right? Uh we know that it's a special place, right? We know that that this is the river that the Israelites crossed uh when they were crossing to the promised land, right? We know that one day after Naaman's time, we know that God's own son will be baptized in this river. But see, for Naaman, the Jordan River was just a dirty little creek, nowhere near as impressive as the other rivers of Damascus. And he was thinking, you know, of course I'm saying paraphrasing and and thinking for Naaman, you know, why? How could this dirty little creek heal me? Is is the water more special? You know, is he thinking, well, is the water more special here? But no, it's not the water. The water is no more special here, uh, even with its history. It's not the water that was going to heal Naaman. And that's one of the things that Naaman needed to understand. You know, I read one time about a German priest. He was an author. He had a lot to do with the Protestant movements. His name was Martin Luther, and his comment was he says baptism is not simply plain water. Instead, it's water used according to God's command and connected with God's word. Now, let me tell you a good little story on me one time. I was working for the American Red Cross, this has been years ago, and I had got a little blister in my nose, and it had been there for quite a while, man. It was there for quite a while. Uh it was nothing I put on it, I went and bought all kinds of stuff and put on this little blister. It was sore and it hurt all the time and it stayed sore. I had my whole side of my nose sore. Uh I could not get this little blister to heal. So I we went to a blood drive one time and we were at a Catholic church. Okay. And so I went in this little room in this Catholic church. We were on there on a Sunday morning. We always at always had a church on a Sunday morning, and we were in this little Catholic church, and I'm setting up some of the stuff for the blood drive, and I look over on the table, and there sits a little thing of holy water. Now I don't know what I was thinking, but I do know what I was thinking. I went and picked up his holy water, I put some on my finger, and I put some holy water up in my nose. Thinking, wow, this holy water will help my blister in my nose. I know, I thought that was pretty funny now that I look back on it. But it wasn't the water. I don't know what, you know, now I understand. You know, I didn't understand then because I was a sinner then. I I was just thinking, wow. They they talk about this holy water and they throw it on people and they push it at people and they anoint people with it. It has to have some kind of healing properties, right? So I stick this holy water up in my nose. Did it heal my nose? Nope. No, no, it didn't. So it's not about the water. It you see, it doesn't matter where you're baptized or or or by whom. It doesn't matter what church or what water you use, whether it's in a babystory or Martins Fork Lake or the Ohio River. It doesn't matter. What matters is that you're doing what God commands you to do. It's about faith. And that makes all the difference in the world. You know what I'm saying? But Naaman is really upset. So the lesson here, the this little lesson that I think we learned on this is God's instructions don't always match our expectations. Amen. God's instructions don't always match our expectations. Isaiah 55, verses 8 and 9. I'm not gonna say the whole verse, but what the point of that is God's ways are not our ways, and his thoughts are not our thoughts. Amen. We learn a lesson there, and I learn a big lesson with the holy water. You know what I'm saying? I put that water up in my nose expecting it to heal it, and it's it's not about that, you know. But the thing about it is it's Naaman almost let his pride keep him from his miracle. And that's one of the biggest things that I wanted to do this today, to let you understand that Naaman, he was prideful. He thought, you know, going and jumping in this little muddy water was beneath him. He didn't want to do that. He didn't want to do what the Lord had sent him to do. He didn't want to go by those instructions. You know? But see, his servants, Naaman's servants actually kind of intervene here. And they tell him, you know, well, if the prophet had told you to go do something great, you would have done it, wouldn't you? You know, wouldn't you? And so I guess Naaman actually, he humbles himself finally. And it goes and dips seven times. And he comes up completely healed. And we've all heard that thing in the Bible, obedience is better than sacrifice, amen. So, friends, the thing about it is, is we may be, we may have a status, we may have power, victory, but we still need to trust in God. And if we aren't careful, we will let our own pride cause us to lose our miracle. Naaman almost let that his pride, his prideful self, he almost let it mess him up. He was ta he was told to go do one small little task, and then he pushed it, you know, he he pushed his pride aside and done what he was told, and his healing came. It wasn't complicated at all. It was obedience. Amen. That's all he needed to do was be obedient. Naaman was a mighty man with a hidden condition, and it wasn't even his enemies that almost destroyed him, it was his pride. Friends, whatever God's asking you to do today, even if it's something that feels small, even if it feels little bitty small, even if you think it feels beneath you, don't let pride keep you from your miracle. Don't let your pride keep you from your healing. You know what I mean? I mean obedience, seven dips. That's all he was told him to do. And Naaman humbles himself. He goes to the Jordan, he dips seven times, and get this. Count this with me. He dipped seven times. It was an act of surrender, okay? Each dip. He lets go of his pride. Dip one, dip two, he lets go of control. Three, he lets go of his expectations. Don't have that big expectations. We cannot go by our expectations. We will be let down. We will be sorry about it. Step four, he trusted God's way finally. Step five, dip five. He trusted God's process. Six, his timing. Seven, full obedience. He ob he was obedience. And his final di, what happened? Complete healing. Amen. Amen. Not just healing, transformation. His flesh was restored, and mostly important, his heart is changed. See, God just God doesn't want your God just doesn't want your hum he wants your humility. He does not want your pride. He doesn't want pride. James 4, verse 6 says, God opposes the proud, but has grace. He gives grace to the humble. Amen. Amen. See, Naaman does exactly what Anlisha structs him to do. And of course, he was probably reluctant, but he did. And see, after he does that, he's he's totally healed. You know what I mean? I mean, friends, ask yourself this today. What does God ask you to do that you've been resisting? I'm gonna tell ya. I'm gonna tell you what I uh my mom, I my the two ladies that raised me, uh, they are my cousins, but I call them my mom and their sisters. And one of them has my brother is is his mom. And they all three got cancer at the same time in the same house. And I know that was a lot of the reason that the good Lord brought me home. Had I have not obeyed and come home, these people might not have made it. I don't know. Because I went over there all the time, the Lord all the time laid it up on my heart and told me go pray for them, go anoint them, take a prayer cloth over there. They were all three ridden, ridden down with cancer at the same time in the same house. But I went over there one day and the Lord kept telling me to go pray for my mom. Now, my mom, some of you that know me and know who I am and know my family know who that I call my mom. And she is a mean what you say and say what you mean type of gal. She says what she means and she doesn't care. Uh she's she's hurt my feelings a few times, and I've gone home crying, and she just didn't know it sometimes, I think. But anyway, uh she says what she means and she means what she says, and so uh she doesn't care. I mean, she doesn't just intentionally hurt your feelings, but uh I wear my feelings on my sleeve. But the Lord kept with kept kept talking, telling me, go pray for Henry again. And I'm like, wow, man, why? I didn't say why, I just kind of slowed at doing it. And I even I even talked to her brother on the phone, my uncle Donnie, and he was like my spiritual father, and he was like, I said, man, I told him, I said, the Lord is telling me to step out of my comfort zone. And he said, What's he telling you to do? And I said, Well, he told me to go across there and pray for, you know, your sister. And he's like, He laughed. He said, You better do it. He knew. He knew how she is. And I'm like, you know, I'm going. I'm going. Slowly. And it's only about from my front door to theirs. It's probably only 25 steps, maybe at the most. But that was the longest 25 steps I've taken in my life. The longest. I didn't think I was ever going to get over there because I was so dreading it. I love her and I go pray for her today anytime. But at that point in time, for some reason, I dreaded it so. And I said, Okay, I'm going, Lord, I'm going. And so I dragged myself reluctantly across the road, across the yard, and I go in, and she's in the bed, and had been in the bed for days, I think. Had been laying down in her bed for a couple days. And I told her sister, I said, Well, I'm gonna go see if you'll let me pray for her. So I go in there, I sit down on the edge of her bed, and here's what I hear. What do you want, Deb? All grumpy like. I'm like, oh Lord, oh Lord, I'm praying. Lord, Lord, help me here. I said, Can I pray for you? And she's she said, Well, yeah. And she stuck her hand up. At me and I'm like, so you should have seen me getting my anointing out of my pocket and anointing her hand before she changed her mind. And I anointed her and I prayed right there, held on to her hand and I prayed for her hard. I prayed for her with everything I could. So then I got up, I went back in the house, living room, I sat down, and about fifteen or fifteen minutes later, here she came. Up out of bed, hadn't been up in days, I think. Now had I've let my pride of not wanting my feelings hurt, had I've not been obedient and listened to the Lord, who knows, she might have laid in there and it would have really been bad. But I listened to the Lord. So when he's asking you to do something, people, he's gonna ask you to step out of your comfort zone. He's going to. Has he asking you to be doing some things you've been resisting? Are you waiting for something but ignoring something simple? Like simple obedience? It might seem simple, and it but when it you really start doing it, it might seem hard too. But really, are you letting your pride stand between you and your miracle? Between you and your breakthrough? Friends, your answer might not be in a dramatic moment. It might not bust all out with stars all around it, and you may not see visions or you know, it may just be in a simple act of obedience. You see, Naaman had everything except wholeness. So you can look strong, but you can still be struggling. And you uh you can win battles publicly, but you'll be losing a battle privately. And see, this young girl, this young captive girl, points Naaman to the prophet Elisha for healing. So see, sometimes God will send your answers through unexpected people. And the question is, have you humbled yourself up enough to hear God? Even if he speaks through someone that you don't expect? Friends, trust me, if you let it and you're not listening to the Lord, your pride will make you miss what God's trying to give you. I'm gonna say that again. Let this limp in. Let this sink into your head. If you let it, your pride will make you miss what God's trying to give you. And sometimes our miracle, our answer, is on the other side of just simple obedience. Because you see, Naaman's miracle didn't happen in a palace, in a great ballroom with all the amenities. Nope. Naaman's miracle happened in a river that he did not even want to go into, he didn't want to step foot in that river. And sometimes, friends, that's exactly where God meets us. In the places that we resist, in the instructions that we question, and in the moments, and the moments that require us to lay our pride down. My friends, today, brothers and sisters, today, whatever God is asking you to do, don't let your pride keep you from your healing. Don't let your pride knock you out of your breakthrough or your miracle. It almost happened to Naaman. See, God wasn't just after Naaman's healing. God wanted his humility. Right? You see, sometimes God will give you some instructions that may not make sense to your pride at all, may not make sense at all to you. Sometimes maybe just to see if you trust him enough to obey. Amen. So, what's God been telling you today? What's he been asking you to do? Asking you to step out of your comfort zone? Maybe telling you to forgive someone. Maybe you need to grant some forgiveness, maybe you need to let some things go, maybe you need to let the past go. Maybe to trust in him, put your trust in him. Friends, even if it feels uncomfortable, even if it feels uncomfortable, we all need to surrender our pride and trust God's ways, even when they challenge us. Amen. You see, this great warrior, he humbled himself before God. He received grace, he received healing, he received peace. Friends, his life was changed forever. And I'm telling you right now, people, listen to me. All that separates the sinner from eternal life in Jesus Christ is a willingly, a willingness to do things God's way. When we become willing to walk the path that God has laid out for us, we will receive eternal life through Jesus Christ. Listen to me, sinners. Naaman was changed because he did it the Lord's way. And friends, really, think about it, there's really no other way but God's way. There's no other way. See, one lesson that we can learn from Naaman is when we ask God for something, we need to leave ourselves open because we never know what direction God's going to come from. We never know where we're going to get our answer from, but we have to let our pride go. If he tells us to do something, we need to set our pride down and we need to do it. Because again, Isaiah 55, God said, My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor your ways, but my ways. My friends, today, obedience. Obedience is doing what God says when He says to do it, in the way that He tells you to do it. You don't have to understand why. You don't have to understand it to obey. And I heard one time, I heard a read the phrase, obedience is the pathway to blessings. See, Naaman wanted term things on his terms. Naaman wanted to do things his way. His terms. But trust me right now, God does not do terms. Read Isaiah 55 again. See, friends, God meets us in places we resist. Again, instructions that we question. Even in our doubt, that's where He meets us. And I need somebody to understand this. Do not let your pride cause you to miss your miracle and your healing. Step up. Friends, step out. Surrender your pride and trust God's ways. Amen. Now there was a little bit more to the story that I didn't finish. I will finish the story. Naaman, so when Naaman goes and he gets healed, okay, he returns to Elisha to thank him. And he also, Naaman, because his eyes were opened, he had gotten healed, miraculously healed. So he wanted to go thank Elisha. And he also wanted to declare before Elijah and all people that were present, he said, Now I know that there is no other, no God in all the earth except in Israel. You see, Naaman didn't have to do this. He didn't have to acknowledge his newfound belief that there was no other God. Because this could have really got him in trouble. Because I would say his own country, I'd say his king probably worshipped other gods. But see, Naaman sees now who's in control. He doesn't have to have, he doesn't have that pride. And this letting go and letting go of his pride and letting go of his control, this puts him on a total new path in his life. He's free from fear. He's free from the need to be in control. He's free from pride. And now he believes that God is he believes he believes in the God that this young captive girl and this mysterious prophet introduced him to. He believes in God now. Right? Amen. But see the story, the story still doesn't stop there. The story doesn't end there. Another character enters this story, and this is kind of a greedy part of the story. See, Elisha, the prophet Elisha, has a servant. Jehazi, I think is how you pronounce his name. Anyway, so so so Elisha decided he didn't want the money. He didn't want the treasure that Naaman was trying to give him, right? And so when Naaman left, uh, he wanted, he took all the treasure with him because Elisha didn't want it. But this servant seen, he seen all this money and wealth leaving, and so he runs after, according to the word, he runs after uh Naaman, and he stops him and he tells him, Well, the prophet's changed his mind, and he would like to have part of the wealth to be given to him. Well, so when Elisha learns of Jehazi's lies, he tells Jehoazi, he says, Hey, you know what? That's greedy. And of course I'm paraphrasing. So he informs Jehoze that you're going to be stuck stricken with Naaman's skin disease. So Jahazi ends up getting leprosy because of his greed. Because of his greed. And then there's one more part of the story. Naaman made a very unusual request for from Alicia, the prophet, when he left. He asked the prophet to provide him with two mule loads of earth to take back to his home country. Now, why? It was kind of weird. Why? Because Naaman wanted to be able to offer burnt offerings and sacrifices to the one true God, to the Lord God of Israel. Now what an ending. Think of it, people. This shows us that the right response to being healed, to being blessed by God, is to always worship him. So Naaman wants to take this dirt. He wants to take a part of Israel, a part of the promised land, a little bit of the promised land, back with him so that his home country, so that he can set up these burnt offerings and sacrifices and worship the Lord. Isn't that awesome? You know? Isn't that awesome? I mean, he's literally bringing a part of the promised land back with him to his country. Did he have to do this to worship God? No, of course not. But this was his way of bringing his newfound faith and his gratitude to God home with him. Amen. I mean, wow. I'd love to have a bucket of dirt from Israel. You know what I mean? You see, God worked a miracle on Naaman's heart. Even so more than in his body. Yeah, he changed his body. But uh but he worked a miracle on his heart. See, Naaman came to Israel a leper, looking for a cure. And my friends, he left a Christian. He left a warrior of God. Amen. Again, God meets us in places we resist. He meets us in our questions, he meets us in our doubt. Friends, we have to become humble and we have to humble ourselves before the Lord, and we have to let our pride go, and we have to step up and step out and do whatever God tells us to do. It doesn't matter what it is, we shouldn't question it. Don't doubt it. We need to do it, whatever it is. He has a method to his madness. I say that about me a lot. God has a reason and a method of telling us to do things. Friends, that's all I had today on this. I hope that this has blessed you as much as it's blessed me to bring it to you. I hope you understood what I was talking about when I said, leave your pride to the side and trust in God. Trust in his instructions. Trust in what he tells you to do. If he tells me to go jump in the lake up here, I'm going to go do it. When he tells you to go lay hands on someone, go do it. God uses me all the time to pray for people out in public. He's even gave me this little, this little, I won't say a little ministry. He's even gave me a ministry of handing out the little Jesuses and prayer cloths. And I hand them out, you wouldn't believe. You wouldn't believe the people that love them and they want them. And I'll be like, you know, everybody needs a little Jesus, and I hand it to them. Friends, do whatever the Lord tells you to do and sit back and watch your miracles. Watch your breakthroughs. Watch your miracles. Anyway, thank you very much for listening. Uh please join me next week on another version of Bible Talk. Uh until then, my friends, please stay in the Word of God. And above all else, let the Word of God stay in you. God bless you all.
